India's G7 Strategy

India’s Strategy for the G7 Summit

Should India Attend G7 Summit?

MY Opinion

India shouldn’t completely boycott the G7 summit, as this would send the wrong message to the entire Western bloc. The G7 isn’t just about Canada or the U.S.—it includes key European partners as well. A full boycott could imply that India is distancing itself from all Western countries. Instead, we could lower our profile by sending our foreign minister, as we did at the SCO summit. This would allow India to raise its concerns while signaling to the U.S. that we have other options, like BRICS.

However, the upcoming U.S. election could change things. If Trump wins, Canada’s stance may soften, as Trump values strong ties with India. Under his leadership, a G7 boycott would be seen as a diplomatic failure, something he’d likely avoid. Therefore, the best approach might be to wait for the U.S. election outcome. If Trump wins, we can attend fully; if Harris wins, we might downplay our presence to signal caution, especially given her campaign’s ties with certain foreign interests.
