Maths Qualifier Guide

In this guide, I will share important topics for the Maths qualifier exam. Just stick to these topics, and you'll be well-prepared.

👉Week 1

Set Theory - Three Venn Diagram problems (confirmed one question). You will be asked either to find at least one case or simply use the formula to find none of the elements in the set.

Relations (confirmed one question). You will be given a set and based on it, you will be asked to check the cardinality of R1, R2, or R1\R2. You might also be asked to identify if it is reflexive, symmetric, transitive, anti-symmetric, or an equivalence relation. Learn about modulus functions and the types of relations that can be functions. This might not be asked but is present in practice and graded assignments.

Everything is very important. The reason is that it's all formula-based, and questions often require using two or three different formulas to solve. Some important formulas include:

  • Angle between two lines
  • Distance formula
  • Section formula when the point is inside the line
  • Equation of a line
  • Point where lines intersect
  • Slope behavior when parallel and when perpendicular

The concept of SSE (Sum of Squared Errors) is very important, with one question confirmed. Questions might either ask you to directly find the value of SSE or give you SSE and ask you to find the value of a. One question from this part is confirmed.

Quadratic Equations - Focus on the roots and the nature of the parabola (when it opens upwards or downwards). Statements about when the discriminant will be rational are often asked. Understand the domain and range of parabolas. Statement-based questions may require finding coordinates and answering related questions.

👉Week 4 (Very Important)

30-40% of the paper will be from here. Important topics include:

  • Multiplication and division of polynomials
  • How to find factors, zeros/roots
  • Multiplicity of roots
  • Turning points
  • End behavior

Questions might ask you to identify end behavior, turning points, possible roots, or to analyze a random graph for these features. I have solved the September 2024 Maths qualifier question paper and explained Week 4. Go through it for some idea.

Important Questions to Practice

Activity 1.6-Q5, 1.7-All, 1.9-1.10 (look at both), 1.11-Q1,4,6.

Week 2: AQ-2.3-Q1,2, AQ2.4-Q2, AQ2.5-Q3, AQ2.6-Q3,4,5, AQ2.10 - solve all questions, SSE - solve both questions.

Week 3 and 4: Focus on practice assignments and previous year questions for more ideas.

I have recorded some topics and explained them to the best of my ability. I will continue to upload and try to simplify as time allows.
